What to do when you lose a filling

Losing a filling can be a scary feeling for anyone, and some people won’t even notice. Many lost fillings while eating and tend to bite down on the filling, which can be extremely painful. If you do happen to lose a filling, there is no need to worry. Losing a filling is treatable by the right dentist!

The first thing you should know is that it is unnecessary to try and save the filling. A filling is easily replaced during a small procedure. Avoiding swallowing is highly recommended due to risk of infection in the lungs.

Step two would be CALL YOUR DENTIST. They need to know immediately that your filling fell out and how you are doing health wise. An open tooth can create sensitivity, due to exposed dentin tubules. Dentin tubules are tiny pathways of communication between the dentin and the pulp of your tooth.

There ARE in fact over the counter dental fillers to hold you over, but ALWAYS consult your dentist before taking any action upon the situation.

Make sure you are keeping your mouth clean! Avoid smoking, and make sure you’re brushing and flossing (more than you promise us you do while you’re here!) An open wound is always at risk for infection, so keeping it clean is a must when losing a filling.

Lastly, the most important thing you can do is see your dentist. Our staff has is the most highly trained in diagnosing and treating dental and oral discomfort. Never hesitate to contact us with ANY questions or concerns about your dental health or fillings.
