Dealing with Sensitive Teeth

Almost everyone has experienced that unexpected jolt of pain when drinking a very hot cup of coffee or an ice cold bottle of pop. The discomfort can be intense and last anywhere from a few seconds to several hours. Actually, this particular sensation is more common than you may think and it probably means you have an issue with tooth sensitivity.

Usually the dentin is covered by enamel, but over time this coating can erode away, becoming thinner and proving less protection again external acids and other stimulations. Also, over time, gums may begin to recede, further exposing the root surface dentin. The dentin contain several tubes or pores that run from the outer tooth to the center, where the nerve is located. When the dentin gets worn down, the teeth are susceptible to changes in temperature and acids in certain foods and beverages.

Some common causes of dentin exposure include improper brushing techniques, gum disease, consuming large amounts of acidic beverages, such as soda, grinding of teeth, using an abrasive toothpaste, having a chipped tooth, and the result of certain dental procedures, such as tooth whitening.

What can be done to alleviate the pain of sensitive teeth?

First and most importantly, the patient needs to discover the cause of the sensitivity; asking your dentist is the ideal place to start. If indeed you realize the sensitivity is due to exposed dentin you have several different courses of action to take, including switching to a soft bristle toothbrush, using a toothpaste special formulated for sensitivity, and using a fluoride varnish to help de-sensitive the affected areas of the teeth.

You should also make sure to refrain from brushing the teeth and gums too aggressively; this can cause recession of the gums as well as expose the nerves of the teeth. Proper brushing techniques can be taught by your dental hygienist or other dental professional.
